Brief History of Christmas Trees
Christmas trees have been a part of celebrating life,
goodness, and joy long before the tradition of Christmas. Here is a
quick look back at some of the roles that 'ol tanumbaum has played:
2500 BC
The ancient
Egyptians celebrated life's triumph over death by decorating their
homes
with palm branches.
300 BC
Evergreens would
brighten the homes of the Romans during their winter festival
Saturnalia;
honoring Satunus the god of agriculture.
700's
An evergreen
decorated with red apples, called the Paradise Tree symbolized
the
feast of Adam and Eve during the Middle Ages.
1500's
The Christmas Tree
first gains notoriety in the little town of Strasbourg, now part
of
France.
1776
Christmas arrives in
America as Hessian mercenaries that were paid to fight in
the
Revolutionary War bring with them this tradition.
1842
The Christmas
tradition is modernized as Charles Minnegrode of Williamsburg,
VA.
begins decorating the evergreen trees.
1923
President Calvin
Coolidge becomes the first President to light the National
Christmas
Tree on the lawn of the White House.
1935
The first generation
of Jensens to grow Christmas trees begins in
Michigan.
1957
Pete Jensen, the
second generation, begins growing and selling trees in west
central
Wisconsin.
1965
JENSEN TREES opens
for business at our current location in Verona,
Wisconsin.
Planting, growing, and selling Christmas trees, we are continuing
the
family tradition.
